Why do my dinner knives have "rust spots"?

My stainless steel flatware dinner knives have rusty spots on them when I take them out of the dish washer.

How come?

To qualify for the term "stainless", steel must contain a minimum of 13% free chromium. Even at that, they will still discolor, just not as much. Thus they stain less. No, I'm not kidding. :)
 
stainless is rust resistant, not rust proof....

is this a recent change? did you also recently change dishwasher soap/rinse?

are they marked with the grade? 18/8? 18/10?
