All three of these unfortunate gentlemen were shot to death in duels. Alexander Hamilton was killed by Vice President Aaron Burr, as a result of a political quarrel. Pushkin was killed by a man he accused of having an affair with his wife. Button Gwinnett was killed by Lachlan McIntosh, after he challenged the latter to a duel for calling him "a scoundrel and lying rascal". Gwinnett is best known for the value of his autograph; of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, his is by far the rarest. One of his autographs sold at auction for $722,500!
