Mississippi Mud Pie has many variations. It is a pie made with a cookie crust: graham crackers or crushed Oreos. The filling is all about chocolate. It is supposed to be as brown as the mud of the Mississippi River. This can be accomplished with chocolate pudding, chocolate cake, or chocolate ice cream. This filling is then topped with whipped cream, marshmallow, chocolate liqueur, chocolate mousse, chocolate syrup and the like. Some cooks add nuts (almonds or pecans) or flavor the pie with finely-ground dark-roast espresso coffee beans or even a dram of bourbon.
