CRAP !!

That was because they all annoyed a journalist !

in the early 1930s, a journalist named Stanley Woodward was assigned to write about a football game between two older universities that he did not want to cover. He expressed his annoyance to his editor that he would not be able to cover games at his alma mater, a younger university. He later printed an article about the athletic activities at the "ivy colleges", or older universities that he happened to be annoyed with. The term "Ivy League" was first printed in the "Christian Science Monitor" in 1935 to refer to older universities. The eight universities that make up the Ivy League signed an agreement in 1945 that set the standards for sports competitions amongst themselves and officially called themselves the Ivy League. They have remained in the "Ivy League" ever since.
