TRUTH !!
'Roman holiday' is a reference to the holiday audiences at gladiator contests who found entertainment in blood spilt. Lord Byron is the source of the metaphor, it coming from his poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Canto the Fourth" (1818). An early example of metaphorical use comes in an 1837 account of a parliamentary election (quoting the line from the poem): "The whole attempt was a farce, and their candidate a victim selected for the sport and gibes of the people, was metaphorically 'butchered to make a Roman holiday.'"
