Taylor Swift had signed a record deal in 2018 with Republic Records after her recording contract with Big Machine Records had expired on her first six albums. Scooter Braun had purchased Big Machine Records for
$330,000,000 in 2019. Braun become the owner of the master recordings copyrighted by Big Machine which included those first six albums of Swift's.
She had been trying to buy those master recordings for years but Big Machine and she could never agree on a deal. Swift claimed she was blocked from performing those songs at the 2019 American Music Awards, so she announced in 2020 that she would rerecord those early songs to create new master recordings.
