A dog was sent to a US prison in 1924, purportedly for murdering a cat !
In 1924, Pep, the black Labrador retriever, was sent to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA. He had his paw prints taken, and his mug shot photo done with a prisoner number hanging around his neck. Members of the media falsely declared that he had been given a life sentence for murdering a cat. However, Pep was not really a criminal. Instead, he was sent to the prison to help boost the morale of the prisoners. He was "pardoned" in 1929 and sent to live out the rest of his days at the prison farm, about 30 mi (48 km) north of Philadelphia.
