Some states, mainly in the western part of the United States, had allowed women to serve on juries before 1900, but there were often restrictions placed on women serving as jurors, and service was often voluntary. Women were allowed to serve on federal juries in 1957, but it was not until 1968 that women gained the right to serve on juries in all 50 states. And it was not until 1979 that the Supreme Court struck down laws that made women's participation in jury duty voluntary.
