TRUTH !!
It's all about the ovaries. A berry is a simple fruit produced by one flower with one ovary, and it has a fleshy pericarp (ripened ovary wall) surrounding two or more seeds. Blackberries, along with strawberries and raspberries, are not true berries because their flowers have more than one ovary, and they are not simple fruits but aggregate fruits. Each blackberry or raspberry has dozens of tiny fruits, while each strawberry may have hundreds! Along with cranberries, blueberries, and gooseberries, there are many other true berries that we don't think of as berries, at least not in the culinary sense. Botanists classify grapes, currants, tomatoes, eggplants (aubergines), bananas, plantains, cucumbers, pumpkins, and even avocados all to be berries!
