TRUTH !!

Carol singing has its roots in the old pagan practice of wassailing whereby people gathered in groups in orchards, to recite incantations and sing to the trees to promote a healthy harvest. From this early start it evolved to groups going door to door, offering drinks from a wassail bowl and singing in exchange for gifts. By medieval times however, wassailing celebrations, with the drinking of spiced ale around Christmas and New Year, had become too noisy and riotous and even included dancing. The more serious Christmas church services marking the birth of Jesus Christ were being ruined by such shenanigans, and so the authorities banned the singers from the church at this time of the year, sent them all outside - giving us the birth of the Christmas carol singers going door to door today.
