Virtually inert to all chemicals, Teflon is widely considered to be the most
slippery material to date. It was discovered by accident when Dupont chemist Roy
Plunkett was experimenting with refrigerant gases in 1938. He noticed that a frozen,
compressed sample of tetrafluoroethylene had spontaneously polymerized to form
polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) PTFEwas marketed as Teflon, and ended up
applied to everything from pots to space suits.
