Oedipus, in Greek mythology, was a brilliant man cursed to kill his father and marry his mother. Since he was abandoned by his real parents, he assumed that the prophecy meant his adoptive parents (whom he thought were his birth parents), and ran away. In running away, he ran right into his real birth parents (whom he did not recognize), killing his father and marrying his mother as the prophecy stated he would.
