To soak or not to soak wood?

I don't recall if this has been discussed before.

Generally, I don't soak wood chunks before putting them on the charcoal in my bullet smoker. But I do soak wood chips for the smoker box on the gas grill.

Opinions?

I used to soak. But people say not to soak. I have tried both and it seems like you get more smoke with unsoaked wood chips but it burns quicker.

I soak if I’m cooking over coals. I dint think I’ll soak in my electric smoker. Get the smoke going early as possible when it makes the greatest impact
