The curry that ... wasn't

I found a recipe for curry using chicken cutlets, cut up tomatoes, turmeric, and thyme. It sounded good so I made it for dinner with rice.

DS made a fuss, said he didn't like curry, so I put a few pieces of chicken aside for him before I added the turmeric.

DD, DH and I ate it, liked it, didn't think it was "burny", and convinced him to try a little bit of the sauce. When he said it was OK, I added back his chicken and everyone had the same dinner and it was fine.

I was just sort of wondering ... doesn't curry traditionally have more spices and coconut milk, though? Somehow, I think this was sort of a fake curry. It was easy and good, but it wasn't really curry, right?

I yam not a "burnt off yo' lips" fan

my experiences with "curry" (in a number of places in the world....) include:

- mild, nice, flavorful
- spicy, perhaps with too many overtones of a specific flavor - all-in-all edible but perhaps not enjoyable
- spicy with overpowering spice X making it inedible
- hot to the point I wash off the food in a mug of water/beer/whatever to get rid of the "curry"

so.... there is no "normal" - ya's buys yer curry as ya's takes yo chances (g)

I wouldn't consider that a curry.
My wife and I used to agree that we didn't like curry..
Because what we had experienced was dishes like that,
which have tumeric and call themselves curry.
True curry, like you described, we like a lot!

Curry is a very generic term to describe the dishes that English people were coming across in India - actually comes from a word that means to cook. Here it is basically used to cover food cooked with spices, usually including chili but not always.
Each Asian country also has it's own versions of curry - Thai & Chinese curries are very distinctive. The Indian sub-continent has the greatest variety of curries ranging from quite lightly spiced, delicate flavours to fierce high chilli dishes that do burn your mouth off.
Coconut milk is not a generic ingredient but can be used to add flavour. Cream can be used instead or no creamy ingredient at all.
Finally, I agree that just adding turmeric does not make curry - there should be a blend of spices.
