2 lbs bulk sausage (sage, maple or hot-they all work well)
1 large onion-chopped
6 slices of whole grain bread
1 egg-beaten
1/4 c milk
1/4 c applesauce
salt and pepper

bottled bbq sauce
grape jelly

Mix the above first 7 ingredients in a large bowl.

Shape into a loaf in a baking dish or pack into a large loaf pan.
Bake at 350 for 90 minutes.

Mix 1/2 cup bbq sauce and 1/4 c grape jelly.
Spread over loaf and pop back into oven for 15 minutes.

No kidding? Bravo!!! It's clearly a well-thought out recipe. I love the applesauce in it - who doesn't love pork and applesauce? And the mixture of grape jelly with BBQ sauce sounds fantastic.

Thanks hun. It sounds like it would be overpowering and sweet, but it's not.
I got the idea from making those little smoked sausages in the crock pot for holiday gatherings.
Same thing, you add bbq sauce and grape jelly to that.

So.. I thought hmmm wonder how that would work on a pork sausage meatloaf.
It does. ;)

Copied and saved, Sass!

Now, I know how the grape jelly and bbq sauce mellows out and mixes with sliced kielbasa or meatballs in a crockpot over a long period of time (I love these as a party appetizer!)

Do you think it would be okay to put the sauce in with the meatloaf BEFORE baking it for the 90 minutes?

I wouldn't put the sauce in the pan or on it for the full 90 minutes.
Not sure what that would do to the sauce.
Any meatloaf I've ever made, the sauces have gone on toward the end.

Considering when I make a meatloaf, there is always a fair amount of liquid floating around in the pan after the first hour or so,-it has to be drained toward the end before adding a sauce topping.
Same thing here, I'd think if you'd add the bbq sauce and jelly before baking, it would break down with that liquid and sorta ruin the whole thing.. so I'd say no.
