Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has been diagnosed for the first time in the state of Washington, in illegally imported pigs.
PRRS is characterized by reproductive impairment or failure in breeding animals and respiratory disease in pigs of any age. The viral disease is the most economically significant to affect U.S. swine production since the eradication of classical swine fever and can be difficult to eradicate once established in a herd, according to the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA).
The Washington State Department of Agriculture's Animal Services Division Compliance Program began an investigation on June 25 of pig imports by an Idaho-based livestock dealer, who in May purchased 704 animals from an Iowa production facility, according to WSVMA. The pigs had a Montana slaughter designation but ultimately ended up in Idaho and Washington.
Due to strains on the meat processing industry from COVID-19, importers brought pigs from the Midwest into Washington, the association said. The animals that entered the state had none of the necessary health documents such as certificates of veterinary inspection, individual identification and entry permits for either Idaho or Washington.
At least 13 animals were brought into Washington and sold on Craigslist, the WSVMA said.
This investigation began because of the results of a necropsy of a pregnant sow. The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory determined the sow was infected with PRRS virus and circovirus 2, and other pigs in the group also were sick. Neither pathogen had previously been identified in Washington pigs.
When WSDA completes the Washington investigation, findings will be submitted for possible enforcement actions. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is conducting its own investigation, and USDA has been notified of the incident.
