Planting ginger

A couple of months ago, I was in an Asian supermarket, needed ginger, and could only buy a whole package of it. Enough for several lifetimes.

Yesterday, I noticed that it had started to sprout. So, I Googled, and found out how to plant it.

I planted two of the larger sprouts in one of my outside containers (that I leave outside) and two smaller pieces in a smaller pot that I will take inside on the Fall (ginger doesn't like temps below 55 degrees F).

Kinda fun to try.

Has anyone else grown ginger?

Unfortunately it didn´t like our cold summer temperatures. Its still alive but I had to move it back indoors.

I harvested two sections of ginger ... now what? Do I leave it to air dry to get that brown skin on it?

Do I slice it and put it in a jar with white wine to keep in the fridge? That's what I do with store-bought ginger.

It's enough to last me a lifetime, because, for me, a little goes a long way.

How do you use it?

I took in a smaller plant for the winter, mainly because I like the bamboo-like foliage.

I've grown it for the "house plant" effect - the hard skinned ginger 'hands' you see on the shelf are harvested after the foliage dies back. that can take 18-24 months.

you can harvest before that - but it typically is not as "strong"

myabe you will use more now that you have more. i hear it's good for digestion and other maladies. you can drink it in tea.

Unfortunately my ginger died at summer. Need to start again later.
