NCT Member Spotlight: Ronjohn

Fisher's Mom

Mother Superior
By popular demand, here is the latest NCT Member Spotlight - Ronjohn!!!

Tell us a little about yourself - your family or household, kids, pets, occupation, etc.

Married, no kids, one needy long haired dachshund.

I work as a "Technical Specialist" putting together parts catalogs for a car company. It's really just a fancy name for project management work.

I have a Bachelors degree in Advertising and Public Relations, and Masters of Business Administration.

What part of the world do you live in?

Currently back in Michigan (Dearborn). Have also lived in Dallas, TX.

How did you find the NCT community?

I was part of the "influx" from one of the other cooking sites. Heard about it, wandered over, and stayed. Doc has been nice enough not to boot me out yet.

How and why did you choose your Username? What does it mean?

It's based off a nickname I picked up playing hockey back int he early 90s. I joined a league and was added to a team who had lost a guy to injury. right when we were supposed to be starting. His name was Ron, mine was John. So after a few "hey Ron, err... John" tries... Ronjohn became my nickname.

I originally registered as Beermaker, which I use on some forums because, well, I make my own beer.

Give us 5 words that describe you.

Sarcastic, Irreverent, Easily Distracted (Yes, I know that's two), Capitalistic, Curious.

Tell us one thing about yourself that people would be surprised to know.

I was adopted as an infant. Couldn't have asked for better parents than the ones I got, either.

How and at what age did you start cooking?

Not sure. I know it was fairly young. It started out as "helping" and just morphed into outright cooking for myself over time.

Do you have a signature dish or one that you make especially well?

I don't think so, but my wife and Father say Ribs. Some of my brewing friends would probably say my Belgian witbier or Margarita Mead.

What is your favorite spice?

Probably garlic. Or hot pepper flakes.

What is your favorite restaurant meal?

Good question. I'll admit I'm a sucker for bar food, so probably something along the lines of hot wings.

What would your last meal be if you could choose anything at all?

Something quick. How about a PBJ sandwich so we can get it over with. I hate waiting around.Oh, I want a beer to go with it though. Probably something "sweetish" like a chocolate or oatmeal stout.

If you could host a dinner party with 6 well-known guests, living or dead, who would they be and what would you serve?

I have absolutely NO idea who. Maybe some former president (not trying to exclude the current one either - I'm adding this as a proof read my answers) type people. Just to hear some of the different philosophies and such.

The what would be a summer BBQ/Grill party. Burgers, Bratwurst, beers. Stuff that makes it easy to socialize and relax. What's the point of getting them all together if you you can't all relax and talk?

If you were going to be stranded on an isolated island for a year, what 6 foods would you want to have to readily available?

I could live for a year on Pizza - so can I get 5 different types of Beer to go with it?

Who would you most like to prepare a meal for and why. What would you serve?

Well, getting one last dinner with my Mom, who passed 5 years back would be nice, but living... Hmm...What I would make would probably depend on the who and when. Up north during the summer, might even go with an on site fish fry with fish fresh from the lake.

Having Vera come by for dinner would be fun, but I'd need to lock up my Bourbon. (VB, you KNEW I'd slip in a bourbon crack somewhere, right?)

Who would you most like to have prepare a meal for you?

My wife! Kidding! I'm Kidding! She cooks... sometimes. No, seriously... um.. Like famous type person? Wolfgang Puck would be cool, since he can do some of the eastern European stuff I was raised on.

100 years from now, how would you like to be remembered?

I have no idea. I figure nobody will, so I don't worry much about it. If someone does, hopefully they think well of me. That would be enough. (Or I'm remembered for winning the lottery, that would work too)

Anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

Answering these questions was tougher than I thought. What's the big deal, trying to make me think???? Oh, and I'd like to thank whomever nominated me. And the academy. You like me! You really like me!

Wow - it's so good to finally see your face, Ronjohn, and it was definitely worth the wait! (How recent is the beach picture? I'm a sucker for a goatee!!!)

Good job RonJohn. You've played hockey. :thumb: I would love to ...would have loved to when I was younger. Now I'm to old to consider trying it.
Interesting Spotlight. I like BEER!!!!!! I have a feeling we'd get along GREAT if we were neighbors. :thumb: :D

Interesting and funny read John, good job. Vera we all love you or is that lust oh well at my age it wouldn't matter much.

Now everyone will know we're in love!!!!

Hoo-boy, can't say I blame you, VB - he's gorgeous!!!

Hey, John, I've been calling you "Ron" all this time! I'm sure you've explained your user name before, but I either missed it or forgot. Love the name "John"!

Excellent job on the spotlight!

Lee

Great interview, John. Thanks. Is that a Great Outdoors Smokey Mountain smoker by any chance? It sure looks like the wide model, something I'm going to buy/order next Thursday or Friday when I get back to FL.

Very nice interview! and great pics! My hubby would be drooling over your beer supply, I call him the beer snob and he very much would like to one day start making his own!
Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself!

:applause: well done, john!

having known him for about 5 years now (my god, it seems so much longer...lol) i'd have to say that this guy is a true gentleman, has a great sense of humour, and we would be the lucky ones to have him for a neighbor.

mostly to steal his beer.

Great spotlight, love your humor! Great beer pic's too. They remind of when my husband was into making wheat beer.

It is exactly the great outdoors model, Buzz. Used it again tonight for some ribs. I'd take some pictures, but they'd just be bare bones now.

Woo hoo. I knew I recognized it. As far as I can tell that wide model is ONLY available through Bass Proshops as of recently and we have a BP locally in Florida. I swear my first official duty next week will be to get/order one.

How are you liking it so far? :chef:

I like it a lot. It's a pretty easy smoker to use, and the results have been great on everything we've tried. I've even managed to dial the heat way down and do some smoked peppers.

The only thing that I've noticed is that the "chunk" woods seem to work better than the shredded stuff (which is what I usually end up having to go with for smoking fish).

So what do you do with all that luscious beer you brew?
I have always wanted to brew, but I'd end up with a beer gut the size of
Texas... got no friends to give it to.

Is it possible to brew like 1 gallon batches?

I mostly drink it, but it takes a while to do it. Having parties helps make it go away without me having to drink it all, too.

You can certainly brew it a gallon at a time, the only reason most brewers go with bigger batches is the time. It doesn't take much longer to make 10 gallons of beer than it takes to make 5 (And a commercial brewery can do 10,000 in about the same time). 5 gallons is a good entry size for a batch and well net you roughly two cases of beer as a point of reference.

Great interview John! Love your sense of humor. I have some relatives who make...uh...used to make moonshine.

John, for someone who played hockey, how can you still have all your teeth? lol--thanks for sharing. I use to help a friend make beer, ales, stout and blueberry mead. He would offer me a taste but I never acquired one but he loved the help and I loved to help....it is fun! Yeast is an amazing organism--it gives us bread and drink.

John, for someone who played hockey, how can you still have all your teeth?

I have a really good dentist. And a custom fit mouth guard. :D

(True story, the only stitches I've ever had to get from hockey came when I had a full cage on. The years I played with just a visor, nothing.)
