We are a couple of mushroom fools here.... if not in salad, then they go in everything else I can think of!!!

Not keen on harvesting my own, too much chance of croaking. Although I'd love to find some morels...

anyway, been kicking around the idea of buying a couple of those mushroom "log" things....

has anyone here ever tried a DIY mushroom kit?

>>log things

yup. after some time I had a "log" thing.

mushrooms are a fungus - as a life form fungus needs relatively narrow ranges of temperature and humidity to thrive / grow / flower.

not exactly "falling off a log" easy - possible, but attention to detail is required.....

I thought of doing it but then I read the 'care and feeding of' and that killed the idea. It gets way to hot here in the Valley not to mention very low humidity.

i did, years ago. they were the psilly kind... :dizzy:

chowder's right. they require a very small window of humidity and temp changes in order to flourish. a tricky thing to pull off unless you have access to a basement or some room (or cave) that has no windows or heating plant. both will cause fluctuations in temperature, and windows will also allow for changes in humidity, however small. drafts are shroom killers.

hth.

My father gave me a log as a gift and it worked great!

I kept it in a shady spot in the summer, and got lots of shitakes that season. I tossed it at the end of the summer.

I've thought about it. We have a spot in our yard, but I'm afraid it would be too dry in the summer and too wet in the winter.

I think I will look into it a bit and probably give it a whirl!

I did one years ago. It was a burlap bag thing and we kept under a staircase (no basement). It produced white button mushrooms for weeks.

I received a kit one Christmas and relunctantly used it...just didn't like the idea of growing mushrooms in the house, and I have had a bad attitude about fungii in general ever since botany class.

I was careful to check out temperatures in various areas of my basement and found an ideal spot. I'm thinking it was a 14 inch square box lined in plastic and sawdusty material. I did get a lot of mushrooms the first blush and enough the second round. The kit was expensive and I personally would not have bought it (see above comments), but it was fun to do and the shrooms were great...don't remember what kind, maybe a white button, but mine got large in diameter.

Finally got out between rain showers and sowed some early veggie crops; peas, beets, endive and bok choi are hopefully sprouting under the agribon tent.
