meat prices

has anyone noticed a drastic drop in thier prices, of any type~. i have! i expect this drop during certain times of year; of course they jack the prices to the limit just before the holiday frenzy, w/ limited deals @ the proper time before the holidays & during so in the end they make $$ on the sales;....... tho this is the lowest i've seen them in a year! the seafood prices were higher, though, & that surprised me. usually they wanna keep that going from the case as quickly as they can, holiday or not.

they compensate, of course (bulk spices crept from pennies to $10, $12 & in now pre-determined amounts.)

anyhow, for a mere $55-ish dollars, i got a family-pack of chix.tenderloin, 2 strip steaks, 2 double-cut lamb lollipops, a pack of veal cutlets, 5 oysters, a skirt steak, a cod fillet that's enough to feed 2, & (crummy) lox. i wouldn't of gotten the cod as i went looking for haddock, tho the last pc. of haddock wasn't enough.
only the speck was its usual $8.00 so i'm not counting that in the $55. summer, spring, autumn, winter, this is def lowest i've seen 'em yet.

I noticed that Tyson boneless skinless breasts are on sale this week for $1.68/lb. haven't seen that in a while!

The chicken was the only meat price that really jumped out at me and they also have thighs and drumsticks on sale for 98¢/lb. I'm a sale shopper so if meat is not on sale, I usually don't buy it. I keep my freezer pretty well stocked. I noticed a few other things that were on sale cheaper than I've seen them in a while though. All Progresso Soup for $1 a can. Gonna stock up on some of that. I love it for lunch or a quick dinner with a sandwich.

vb, kinda get the fog you speak of, get into that unfocused mode. tho i'll focus so sharply on detail on some foods. especially meat & produce.

mama, i'll hafta see if there's a sale on soup here. my Mom would like that to take for lunch.

forgot to mention that i got city chix meat/skewers for $3.47.

& that canada dry, if u look for it in the cases, has $1/case coupons on some of them. i think they're holiday overstock. hafta look where i shop, as they seem to be hiding them. i wait for a sale, then find those ones.
(i always get my food from as far as i can reach. usually due to finding the better cuts, prices, in-store, on-the-item coupons & fifo).

i'm so baffled. calling corporate to see why so cheap.

luvs - Are there any Shop-Rites out your way? There is 1 more week of the can can sale left. Lots of soups on sale.

we haven't got those, peepz- no krogers, either, mama. hm, i'll skim the ads. pittsburgh is mostly 'iggle (giant eagle) that is comprised of thier regular stores & thier market districts too. plus there's food in the strip district & all kinds of corporate stores, tho not many shop them except for TJ's & whole foods & aldi & that.

i'm an 'iggle girl thru & thru, :flowers:

What is Aldi? What kind of store is it? A regular market or more of a WF or TJ? I think we just got one here. But there has already been trouble. Picketers with unfair wage/hiring practices etc signs. I won't cross a picket line.

oh, it's one of those bargain stores w/ brands u don't see @ other places. i haven't gone to one. i was given cheesecake & the flimsiest bottle of h20 by my friend from an aldi- the cheesecake, mediochre, the h20 bottle bugged me. she luvs the place. she is a self-proclaimed cheapskate, tho.

"Aldi" is HORRIBLE!!! It's owned by the same company that owns "Trader Joe's", but there the comparison stops.

We had an "Aldi" settle here a few years ago, & it makes my skin crawl to go in. We've never bought anything there, but have gone in once in awhile for a lark. HUGE stacks of pseudo/fake name-brand stock - some of which is really funny. Mac & Cheese in a pseudo "Kraft" blue & yellow box with a similar name; cereals ditto; really dicey-looking canned oysters next to pseudo "Hamburger Helper"; 5-pound packages of Oscar Meyer bologna; & unrefrigeratored cartons of "fresh" produce with swarms of fruit flies flitting over them? Sound appetizing yet?

I really cannot understand how they stay in business, since they're right across the street from a "Super WalMart", which has brand names at VERY reasonable prices, lots of selections, & is way cleaner than "Aldi". I'd love to see Aldi's close.

The Aldi stores here are clean. They are a "no frills" kind of store. You have to bring your own bags and bag your own groceries.

I'm not a big fan of Aldi's off brands which is mostly what they sell. I've only tried a few of their brands though so I can't speak for all of them. Sometimes they get deals on name brand stuff. About the only time I go there is to get my turkeys and hams around the holidays. They usually have the best prices on Butterball and they have spiral sliced ham that's usually about 40¢ less per pound than anywhere else around here.

They do have some cheap prices. I wouldn't want to see them close. I would imagine there are a lot of folks who can stretch their dollar a lot further at Aldi than they can at a traditional store.

And please don't get me wrong, I am definitely NOT a food snob. In fact, fish sticks & Kraft mac & cheese is one of my favorite "comfort foods".

But I draw the line at the cheap crap that Aldi sells. There's nothing wrong with indulging in some processed stuff once in a while, but anyone who does all their shopping at Aldi can't be even remotely healthy. And with a Super WalMart right across the street!!! Granted, WalMart isn't necessarily a bastion of good health either, but it's far far better than Aldi, & the prices are frequently lower. Plus, it's CLEAN! (At least ours is.)

I was just checking out the Aldi sale paper and they have a Wednesday special this week on Tyson Split Chicken Breast for 89¢/lb. I don't know that I've seen them that cheap anywhere in a long time.

Well heck, if your Aldi is a nice one, I'd certainly snap that up. Ours has a "meat section" that is - literally - 3 feet long & that's it. Five-pound packages of Oscar Meyer bologna is all we've seen there. It's really a sad & creepy place.

Cheapest I've bought skin-on bone-in split chicken breasts around here has been $.99/lb. (Perdue brand at WalMart.)

that's a deal, mama. if u like that price, & the place is clean, by all means, buy em, i say! my deal w/ disliking the no-frills store my parents used to like was the food, the environment. so uncozy. just food in stacks or placed on shelves when they found the time. i refused to ingest most of the food 'cept 4 thier plochmann's mustard. i insisted then, as a teenager, on the iggle.
i like market districts as while people consistantly man each specialty section that know thier stuff, the ones from say, produce, u can approach & say, 'sir/ma'am, could you point me to where i might find the the _____' & they'll be like aisle 12b, shelf 4. or other ones offer you a sample (by that i mean 1/4 a personal pizza) of food before you choose the ones you like or dislike. stuff like that. i luv going when they offer cooking demos & that. & geez, celebrity Chefs/cooks visit, meet u, (sara moulton & rick bayless were here for the 1st one's opening. i met bayless. tho he was less a fave that day than he already was). a 1-man band playing @ the store while u shop? market district. looking for imported food....... market district. ....... can't say enough 'bout my 'iggles. the stores're lovely, the good ones, anyhow; u can eat there, sushi or breakfast or your choice; buy & take to the dining area. stuff like that.
