JBS Food Canada’s Provigo ground beef recalled

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – On Sept. 27, JBS Food Canada recalled its Provigo brand ground beef products from the market due to possible E. coli O157 contamination. The recall warns the public against consuming theses recalled products:

  • Variable size Provigo Medium ground beef club packs with UPC codes that begin with 0 213026 bearing Best Before dates of 16.SE2020 or 17.SE2020 or 18.SE2020
  • Variable size Provigo Lean ground beef fresh club pack with UPC codes that begin with 0 217334 bearing Best Before dates 16.SE2020 or 17.SE2020 or 18.SE2020
JBS Food Canada initiated the recall. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings if other high-risk products are recalled. CFIA will verify the industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace once it completes that process.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The food recall warning issued over the weekend by JBS Food Canada has been updated to include additional product information, and has also been amended to correctly identify the affected products, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a news release. This additional information was identified during CFIA's food safety investigation.
Products added to the recall include Provigo medium ground beef packaged in various sizes, with a product code that begins with 0 214117, and "best before" date codes of 23.SE2020 up to and including 28.SE 2020; Provigo lean ground beef packaged in various sizes with product codes that begin with 0 217331 and "best before" date codes between 23.SE2020 up to and including 28.SE 2020; Metro lean ground beef in packages of various sizes and product codes that begin with 0 201020 and « pkgd on » dates from 24.SE 2020 up to and including 26.SE 2020; and metro lean ground beef family pack in various sizes, with product codes that begin with 0 201710, and « pkgd on » dates from 24.SE 2020 up to and including 26.SE 2020.
The release also provided corrected information on items previously recalled: Provigo medium ground beef club packs with product codes beginning 0 213026 with corrected "best before" dates from 23.SE2020 up to and including 28.SE 2020; and Provigo lean ground beef club packs with product codes that begin with 0 217334, and have corrected "best before" dates of 23.SE2020 up to and including 28.SE 2020.
The recalled products have been sold exclusively at Provigo Hull, 1 du Plateau, Gatineau, Quebec and Metro (Marché Kelly), 910 Maloney boulevard east, Gatineau, Quebec.
The recall was triggered by the company. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace, and there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
