Indoor Fireplace Grill

For father's day, my son got me an indoor fireplace grill. It's made out of stainless steel and just barely fits behind the fireplace's glass doors, but it sure looks like fun and I am dying to try it. It's quite large and very sturdy. God only knows what he paid for it.

For years, we have cooked baked potatoes and sirloin strip steaks in the fireplace (potatoes in foil and steaks cooked using long-handled fish-type baskets) whenever we had a fire, but we were pretty much limited by the small-but-secure fish-style baskets and extremely hot fire to smallish strip steaks. Now, no such limitations!

Does anyone else here cook regularly in their indoor fireplace? Do you use a real grill like the one my son got me? Is there anything special I should know about such cooking? We always use aged hardwood (very little smoke) and never artificial logs... and we always wait for the super-hot coals to form rather than cooking over a visible, open flame.

I think this opens us up to all sorts of new cooking options. Just got to get some better cooking gloves and some very long cooking tools or my hands are going to get burned for sure!

Take care,
Tom

I've never heard of one of these, gramps. (But that's not saying anything.) Can you post the name or a link to this type of grill? Because I have a fireplace and it sounds like a wonderful addition.

I should have done that... sorry! Unfortunately, my son took the box and all the paperwork with him when he left that day (I don't think he wanted me to find out the price!!!). There is no brand name showing on it.

I'll have to contact him and get back to you.

Take care,
Tom

Thanks, gramps! In the meantime, I'm sure some of our grilling experts will be able to advise more knowledgeably. (I'll be taking notes!)

Now all we have to do is pray for a really cold day so we can fire up the fireplace before fall!!!

I'm in Texas so I'm pretty much SOL til at least January. LOL But I see you're in Boston - you might have a shot at it!

I must admit that I was more than a little bit shocked at the cost.

That thing looks kewl! :thumb:

We've done potatoes before, but I'm leary bout cooking with the carpet and all. Plus my fireplace is only an insert type. When we move one of the stipulations will be a nice big brick fireplace...maybe I can get one of those old cast iron cooking stations that swing in and out from it. ........that would be sweet.

I use one of those camping grills outside over my firepit though.

It *does* seem like cast iron would have been better (and probably much cheaper)... but I didn't have any say in the matter! It was a gift!

Take care,
Tom
