I REALLY need to move......

Mama

Queen of Cornbread
Talk about an interesting evening...the house next door to mine is a rental and I guess with the economy being what it is, they are having a hard time keeping renters so they will rent to anybody.

DH and I were out in the back yard last night. We had just finished putting the rotisserie on the grill and were fixin' to start putting the plants in the garden when we heard this terrible commotion.

We looked over next door and one of the new neighbors jumped over the gate to his backyard and started running across the yard followed by 5 men dressed in black, in masks with guns drawn and "GANG TASK FORCE" written across their backs!

The got him down on the ground and handcuffed him and then questioned both him and his wife separately in the backyard. I saw another guy over there with "DEA" written on the back of his shirt.

There were 5 unmarked cars in front of the house and they spent about 3 hours going in and out of the house to a van they had parked in the driveway. DH went over there after they were taken off to jail and tried to find out from one of the officers what the heck was going on and all they would say was that it was an ongoing investigation and the couldn't talk about it but it wasn't anything for us to worry about....REALLY!!!!!

I don't know how I'm going to find out what happened but I will! I really need to move but with the market being what it is...and this neighborhood being what it is...it would be extremely difficult to get rid of this house. This neighborhood used to be wonderful when we first moved here 20 years ago but as the city gets closer and closer, it goes further and further downhill.

It's really sad...they've lived there about 3 weeks and have three kids. One 12, one 4 and one is 3. DH called the owner of the house and told him what was going on so who knows what will happen next.

Are you going to be on COPS or DEA? I have only known two people that were on the cops tv series, it would be nice to know more. :whistling:

All kidding aside, that must have been freaky.

I sure was glad DH was home last night. I wouldn't have wanted to have been here by myself. They were out on their back deck this morning talking on their cell phones. They must still be really excited because they were talking loud enough for me to hear that it sounded like they were bragging about it.

Sorry you had to experience that Mama, it truly would have freaked me out too.
Hopefully the landlord will throw the bums out.
It sucks when you have a place you've called home for all those years and have to worry about people of their ilk living so close.
Sadly some renters will allow anyone to live in their properties, as long as the $$$ keeps rolling in.

Man oh man. That's horrible. Sound like the owner will get them the heck out of there and hopefully get a decent renter in there. Sit tight I figure they won't be there long ....but I would be nervous also if I saw that kind of commotion going on next door.

Does one of them look back at you out of mirrors??

Mama - if you have a neighborhood association, they will usually have a police officer that liaisons with them. That is the officer you should contact to get more info.

I know what you mean about wanting to move. My neighborhood is downtown and we had a lot of trouble about 10 years ago with hookers working at the end of the street. Any illegal activity brings more illegal activity. We managed to get the hookers to work elsewhere by having the neighborhood association work closely with the police department and it's much better now. But truthfully, no neighborhood is immune.

It's really scary when it happens next door. And that there were small children is just heartbreaking.

I second getting them out, but, if there is a lease, it may not be possible. I had renters once that I wnted out and the Attorney said I couldn't do it.

That's what I'm afraid of Andy. I doubt the guy who owns it even did a background check. There are several rentals in this neighborhood with more and more popping up because they can't sell and want out. The house across the street is also a rental and the gangsters "friends" moved in over there a week ago.

FM this is an old neighborhood, we've never had a neighborhood association.

Mine is a very old neighborhood, too. All of the houses are 90+ years old. We formed our association about 15 years ago for this very reason. It's a voluntary association that has nothing to do with deed restrictions, etc. The purpose is to make our neighborhood safer and protect values by keep bad activity out.

Your local police department can help you do it. They will even provide cell phones for neighbors to use when walking through the neighborhood. It's worth doing. We have a Yahoo group for our association so that when anything happens in the neighborhood, an email goes out to all the residents. We can also give each other the heads up on weird things we've noticed.

What a great idea FM! Thanks, I'll talk to some of the other neighbors and see what we can come up with.

Sorry to hear it, Mama. Glad you & yours were not hurt. I would trust that the PD, DEA is working on it, & go about my biz. Be aware of what's around you when you go out. If this is an isolated incident, I would hang in there. Even the best neighborhoods are not crime free. We have had a few incidents here, as well. The market is bad right now. You could organize a neighborhood watch.

It made a huge difference in our neighborhood. Plus our officer is very invested in the neighborhood because she sees how much we all care. We all have her phone number and can call her with any concerns. It makes their job much easier.

Here's another story about how it has made a difference. This is a mixed income neighborhood. There are houses that at extremely expensive and there are rental properties. At the end of my street, there is a small apartment building. It was built probably 50 years ago to house families of soldiers stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, which is located at the top of my street. It became Section 8 housing and there was constant turmoil up there for a while. By working with the police department, the owners were fined for every offense and after about a year of that, they sold it to an investor who made it subsidized housing for the elderly. They renovated the property and put caring management on site. The result it wonderful! Quality, affordable housing for older people and zero problems for the neighborhood.

Well as someone that grew up in South Florida don't let it get you down Mama. Look on the bright side the gang task force and DEA where their to put a stop to it. As for your husband being home I guess the police don't make you comfortable but let it, they do know their job.

It wasn't uncommon in West Palm Beach or Pompano for that matter and my advise it don't get close to your neighbors regardless.

Mama... just be happy you no longer live in PA... my back neighbors are a grandmother, a married couple, 2 drug addict sons (one just got out after 3 years in "the pokie" and a sometimes living there crackhead brother... in a 650sf 1 1/2 br rowouse.. sometimes with an inflatable wading pool. The grandmother won't leave the house, the wife won't leave the property. The Husband just got laid off.. his was the only job... the wife spends all night getting rocked on pills and beer in the back yard and talking sh*t about everybody in the neighborhood. Sadly I think I like them better than the little yuppie couple who just spent over a quarter-mil on the POS new house going up next door.. they are in for a surprise. I have a friend a few blocks away who's neighbor raises fighting pits and recently attacked her with a pipe so overall I guess I am lucky.

Oh and I am active in my neighborhood association too.. unfortunately it is dominated by a bunch of artsy nutjobs who think the whole neighborhood should be a land of vegan pastries and grazing unicorns... totally detached from reality.

LOL! I know it isn't funny to you, but your description is sooo funny, Pancho. Especially about the artsy/fartsy/crunchy neighborhood association. We have had a little of that, too.

I guess I should be thankful Pancho...your neighbors definitely sound a lot worse than mine. ...sorry, I probably shouldn't laugh....

I'm going to talk to some of the neighbors and then talk to the Police Dept. to see if we can get this thing organized.

It wasn't because the Police were there that I was glad that DH was home when all of this happened, joec, the whole situation was just scary and came totally out of the blue. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to all of this gang stuff. All I know is what I see on TV and I don't know if that is the way it is in real life or not. My imagination would have really run wild if I had been at home by myself.

I probably watch way too many crime dramas.
