I finally got a vent hood!

Fisher's Mom

Mother Superior
DH and I spent the day installing a vent hood here at the coast. I've wanted one forever down here. Most of the time was spent cutting holes to install the ducting but it's finally done and it's sucking air like crazy! I am so happy!

That would be so much fun, Barb! But how would we ever get the back splash done what with all the arguing and then the kissing and the rolling around in jello?

(That was for BT.)

I am so happy for you Terry!

There is nothing like having a vent to suck out all the burnt fumes billowing out of your kitchen for all the neighbours to enjoy.
Don't ask me how I know this. ;)

ok, good, we're rolling now.

don't stop.

you're angry. very very angry. who does she think she is wearing something like that? i should just tear it off of her.

and her lips, so full...

(now, run with it)

with that pouty look she thinks she's hot shit...

but wait, what does she think she's doing with that mushroom? It can't be......now I'm livid

damn, why does ronjohn in a torn dress, scarf, and poorly applied make-up keep popping into my head.

i need help.

Um... Late to he party (as usual).

I am glad about the vent hood. I was at war with my neighbors when I put mine in. It is on their side so I made liver and onions a couple times.

Howz come I don't sees no pitchers? No Brownie Instamatic at the coast? Is it like dis 1?

Congrats on the new hood Terry:) I know how getting things done like that can be such a relief! We want pics!!!

I will be putting one in here during the remodeling of the kitchen. We have a vent less one now that is pretty much useless except for good lights on it. I've sure built a bunch of them as a sheet metal worker though they all went into restaurants not homes. All of course where stainless steel or copper built to Miami industrial building codes which are probably the strictest in the country for construction of any kind.

I'm probably going with the second type Joe posted but haven't decided as of yet.

I used to make a lot of hoods, too, Joe. SS ones though. Then of course when codes changed, requiring them to be fitted with lights and ansul systems, it was more economical to buy them from a sheet metal shop that specialized in SS hoods. I could do that kiind of work all day long, with the exception of going home smelling like Argon.

It's this one. I bought the 36" one even though my stove is only 30" because I always think bigger is better. LOL I was limited as to space because the cabinets come down pretty low over the stove. We also had to mount it in off to the side slightly because there was a 2x4 in the way where I wanted it to go, which meant I had to move the stove over, too. So now I have to build a small cabinet next to the stove to bridge the gap between the stove and the counter. (It's always something, right?) JoeV, I love the last vent hood you posted.

I have one that looks almost identical to that one FM only 30" wide. It does ventless or vented though there is no duct up through my roof so we have it setup as ventless. It is the Broan Allure model that I bought when we came here 6 years ago. There was nothing before that making me think the previous people here didn't cook at all. None of the appliances looked like they had ever been used except the microwave, washer and dryer. The refrigerator went out last month but it had been here about 20 years with most of the plastic drawers inside starting to crack and break. I'm really chomping at the bit to open this kitchen/dinning area up a bit too.

I know exactly what you mean, Joe. I bought my stove at home used, but it couldn't have been used more than a couple of times by the looks of it.

I can't wait to see the pics of your kitchen remodel. Be sure and take pics from the beginning. I love the demo part best!

So far, this hood seems to be working great. I know that ducted vs non-ducted makes a huge difference and luckily, we could duct it.

OK - here's my guilty secret. Another big reason I wanted a vent hood is that down here, we have big get-togethers late at night where everyone sits at the dining table and plays poker or chats or whatever. About half of those people smoke and it makes the air pretty thick. (Usually, we go outside to smoke but there are mosquitoes here sometimes that are big enough to carry off a poodle!) I have air filters in every room but they can't keep up with this crowd. Since the dining area and the kitchen are all one big room, I was hoping it would help on those nights. (I am so ashamed.)

Aside from the obvious advantage of venting heat and smoke to the outside, a hood reduces or eliminates atomized grease from getting on your cabinets, walls and ceilings. Hoods that recirculate the air back into the kitchen blow some of these atomized grease particles back into the room, plus, they do nothing to remove excess heat from the kitchen. IMO, they are actually a fire hazard, because most people do not clean the filters, which hold lots of grease. One good pan fire that reaches the filter, and it's all over. You made the right choice by venting your hood.

That's so true, JoeV. I wash my filters monthly and I am amazed at all the grease and gunk trapped in there! I got a high-capacity vent hood for my home in San Antonio when I re-did the kitchen 3 years ago, which has it's own chimney for venting. I have really noticed the difference as far as grease on the walls and cabinets. I have glass front cabinets and there is almost no grease when I clean them.

It will be a major job to duct it out through my roof as it is metal with a 2" layer of spray foam insulation on the outside. It will mean bringing in the company that put it on last year. We though the roof was leaking last winter only to find out it was condensation due to heat from below and snow on top. Cost us just over $9K to do a 28' x 45' building but still about 1/3 the price if it was sprayed inside as well as the cost to gut the place.

At any rate I will take pictures all the way through the process though I'm not doing the work myself. We did the the living room, bedrooms and bath rooms 3 years ago. We replaced all the ceiling drywall and insulation as well as all windows and rebuilding the back porch. All that is left now is the kitchen cabinets, counter tops and painting the kitchen. My kitchen is about 10' wide and 15' long though it is split with a dining table on one side of the room.

Very impressive that you did it yourself but not surprising. I think it is wonderful and send you congrats but what I love the best about you Terry is how often it is the small things that make you the happiest. You don't take anything for granted and it is a wonderful trait.
