The temperature was a near record 90F today and the humidity was off the page on the high side. Our target was Grouper in the 20-25" range. We got our share of them but not before the Gulf of Mexico tested our old bodies. The day started off over a wreck loaded with Amberjack, none of them small. We caught a bunch in the 30-50 pound range and they flat wore us out in the hot and sticky air. Jacks fight like crazy and do their best to strip all the line off the reels when they get this big.
Admiral Don, owner of the boat, pulled up this Jewfish (now called Goliath Grouper thanks to political correctness). This one is a perfect eating size but unfortunately they are illegal - big mistake because they are everywhere and often gobble our black, gag, and red groupers before we can get them to the surface. This one is but a babe - the Florida record is 680 pounds.
I've had my fun. Dinner tonight is a trigger fish and grouper fillet combo.
