Harvesting Daikon radishes

Well, Mr. GreenJeans told me to hold off planting daikons until Memorial Day, so I did that.

They have much greenery, and are ready to bolt - I just pinched off some seed heads.

I can't believe they have had enough time to grow to be the big white radishes that I'm hoping for.

What do you think, Mr. GJ, or anybody?

I only have about 6 in a huge pot, but I guess I'll have to sacrifice one to see what's happening, huh?

qsis, if they're ready to bolt, then you'll need to carefully dig away some of the dirt around the root stem of one of them to see if it's worth picking.

it's been unusually hot for the spring, so i wouldn't be surprised if they're bolting before they're able to grow a nice radish under the soil.

if you decide to leave them in the ground as they go through their bolt, the radish will turn woody over time, so it's a guessing game as when to pick.

Yeah, I was afraid that would be the case, BT.

I will do as you suggested when I get home from work today.

Thanks!

Here are a couple of pictures of my daikons (taken a day or two ago).

The first is a large pot of maybe 6 daikons - very impressive foliage. I pinched off the seed pod shoots.

The second picture is of the top of one of the radishes, where I brushed away some of the soil to peek, as BT suggested. It's about as big around as my index finger.

I'm leaving them in. What the heck, it's worth a try!

The Daikons have bolted repeatedly. I just kept ripping off the seed shoots, and leaving the roots in the soil.

QBro pulled up a radish and had to spit it out, it was so woody.

I pulled one up, had to cut off about half of it because something bored it's way in there, but the other half is crunchy, spicey and great!

I still would not call this a successful venture!
