I netted 3.2 pounds of very fresh sprouts for $4.79 - not too shabby !

I'm one of those who loves brussels sprouts. My ex father in law loved to grow a large garden and always planted a couple of rows of brussels sprouts, and I was the only one in the family who would eat them. I would cut the stalks down and bring them back to Richmond on the stalk, just like the ones you purchased.

I stopped in to visit with him a few weeks ago for the first time in 40 years. He is now over 90 and not in the best of health, but still plants a couple of rows of sprouts. He invited me to come and harvest next summer. Those I don't eat go into the shredder to be recycled as compost.

That is soooooo cool and those cooked sprouts look wonderful LT! Is the recipe posted?

I love brussels sprouts and wouldn't mind paying the extra money for the stock. If I could find them. I don't see them in the store very often when I do I usually buy them and less of the size of small cabbages I prefer small brussel sprouts over the larger ones. I just like to steam them that had a little butter and salt and pepper and I'm in heaven, brussels sprouts are very delicious and full of nutrients. LT are those potatoes with the brussels sprouts?

Radishes, Guts !

to paraphrase, "The Bigger the Bitter" - but I don't have a problem with THAT, either, I love'em so much !

Just one more item my Mother couldn't get me to eat, which I now can't get enough of..........

thanks LT I'm a little slow this morning and didn't see the link still on my first cup of coffee (decaf)

Aren't sprouts on the stalk LOVELY!!! They make me SO miss living on Long Island where we'd drive out to the East End & hit all the farmers markets - long LONG before farmers markets were the "in" thing. Stalks of sprouts for $1-$2, HUGE heads of broccoli & cauliflower for between $.25-$1.00/head. Boy, do I miss those days.

Since Xmas though, our local Martins supermarket here in VA has been selling sprouts on the stalk. For a whopping $4.99 per stalk, but I still can't resist. The freshness is so far above the prepicked/prepackaged sprouts that it's worth the cash.

I can't get pre-packaged sprouts for $1.59 a pound, which is what these cost me.......
not to mention, as you did, the quality and freshness.

Hope my market keeps carrying these gems.

Yes - the stalk sprouts around here average (after plucking off the stalk) between 2-3 pounds of sprouts. And they're SO fresh. The only problem I have is that the stalk is too big to stick in the fridge, so I stand it up outside on my deck with the cut end (which I re-cut) in a bowl of water. Keeps everything fresh for days - even in below-freezing weather.

Save the idea for next time - it really works! Even though our night temps dropped into the 20's & the water in the bucket/bowl froze, my sprout stalk survived just fine. Let's face it - folks who grow them (as I have in the past) leave them in the garden well into winter, & they're still delicious.
