lol, buzz, you old flyboy. only pilots use zulu time.
i hear you, lefty, about clock envy.
all of the clocks in our building, especially in the control rooms and studios, are sync'd up and driven by a couple of computerized systems; one very old and one new.
the old system uses a cesium standard clock pulse generator to cause each clock on a line connected to it to advance 1 second. in other words, it sends a chunk of energy down each line to pulse each clock once a second.
when something goes wrong, all of the clocks on that line are affected by it, so you can't just go around manually adjusting each clock or it would take you several days. if a driver fuse gets blown (by homotrons, lol) and a line of clocks falls behind, we have to replace the fuse after clearing the short, then double step the drivers to get the time back into sync with the naval observatory reading. that is, cause 2 pulses to go out every second so the clock advances 2 ticks per second.
i can't tell you how many days i've wanted to double step the clocks around lunch time (when nothing's wrong) so by 2pm, the clocks show it's quittin' time.
