I did some research on refractory and it is very confusing. A refractory can be a heat resistant stone or stoneware for cooking. They make pizza ovens with refractory brink as well as food grade pizza stones.
With that said, maybe you need an eat resistant container to layer this dessert with the hot milk mixture?
My wife had no answer. She used a Corning Ware bowl.
