Buttery Date Bars
From my mom's old recipe file.

Filling:
2 cups pitted dates
3/4 cup sugar
1 T freshly grated orange peel
2 T orange juice
1 cup water
Crumb Base and Topping:
1-1/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 t salt
1/2 t baking powder
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup sweet butter or margarine, softened
2 cups quick or regular cooking rolled oats, uncooked
Make filling:
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over low heat till thick, about 25 minutes, stirring frequently. Cool.
Make crumb layer:
Sift together flour, salt and soda. Stir in brown sugar. Cut in butter till mixture resembles crumbs. Stir in oats till well blended.
Firmly press about 2/3 of oat mixture into greased 9-inch greased square baking pan. Srpead with filling. Sprinkle with remaining oat mixture lightly over top; press down lightly.
Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or till golden brown. Cool. Cut into little squares. Makes 25 cookies.
