I have a grill coming in the mail. it is on a slow boat from Japan. estimated time it gets to me is mid September.

I got it on a whim. not looking at the fuel, first.. I found Binchotan Charcoal costing $400 for a 20lb box.!! hahah..

I found cheaper versions, like Binchotan styles out of Laos, about half the price, but the $80 shipping is a jagged pill to swallow. to break in the grill, I am going to try a domestically available charcoal, I bought at HOME DEPOT. mixed reviews, but I won't start off making high-end yakitori.. probably low end yakitori, and my subpar fuel should work.

there is a local lump charcoal producer near me. I bet that works.

the grill coming to me is a Konro grill. sucks the legit charcoal costs the same as the grill. hahahha...

fun fact, to be legit Binchotan charcoal, it needs to come from a specific region of Japan. like Bourbon...from Bourbon county. :D

I did a little more reading on your grill and fuel, Hobie. Found this:

A Warning on Standard Lump Charcoal
Avoid standard grocery store lump charcoal or regular barbecue briquettes in your Konro grill. They burn too fast, spark wildly, produce heavy smoke, and create thick ash that will clog the small vents of a Japanese ceramic or diatomite grill. [1, 2]

I've read that.

seen opposing videos. really depends on what you're cooking. binchotan burns about 5 hours, which is crazy. a ribeye, won't need that duration.

Really interesting grill and fuel! Please keep us posted!
