Being United

sorry Blues, when I first saw this, I was thinking you'd say "and boy are my arms tired." ;)

yeah, I hear ya.. I sat on a runway in Detroit once while they de-iced the wings, then something else happened down in the cargo... finally made it back home to England (at that time) very off schedule and very tired.

Gawd I hate flying of late. For the past few years I find myself avoiding trips when possible because I don't want to deal with all the aggravation associated with all the airports and airlines. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do it though. It is better than two or three days on the road. That's another type of aggravation..

One of my customers told me that he sat on the tarmac so long in Detroit, that they had to refuel the plane for the 30 minute jaunt to Erie.

I have to fly to VA, in Nov, and am not looking forward to it. I found a non-stop on the way down, but I have to connect on the way back. I wish I could take the train back.

Try it with 2 artificial hips.

Security left my passport - Cash (Exposed) - backpack all in plain sight while they took me to another room for a thorough going over and a pat down AFTER I showed them the card from the Dr. Saying I had artificial hips.

man, i'm tired and cross eyed this morning. i read this as being un-tied.

i thought vb was getting in a quick post before her parents arrived...

It all started in 1978. You demanded airline deregulation. You got it. Inflation adjusted ticket prices are much lower than they were in 1977. Be careful what you ask for.

Buzz - I hate to be contrary - My issues started when the ineffective security measures were installed after 9/11. I see nothing that has been done that would prevent 9/11 from happening again.

Pricing? No problem getting what I pay for. I liked people express.

As stupid as airport security is, terrorists are even stupider. They love big explosions and a hundred thousand pounds of kerosene really lights up, but I think they're planning softer targets for the future. There are many other ways of weaseling their way into power that they are constantly working on. I've posted this before but everyone needs to be aware of what is REALLY going on. http://actforamerica.com/

As to People Express, you made me wince. I still vividly remember my crew and I holding our breath as we walked past the People Express boarding gate in Buffalo. I don't think any of those passengers even used a bidet much less took a shower. They were worse than the Indians out of Paris. I think I'm gonna barf. :puke1:

i just spoke with my terrorist neighbors, and they said that the "in thing" is to blow up hotels these days. airlines and mass transit systems are so last week.

Man I hate to read this since I will be flying to California next week! I esp hate flying while preg. I really hope we dont have any delays esp while on the runway after that story about a month ago where they were sitting ont their plane for 6 hrs with the bathroom backed up :sad:
At least I'll have just me to worry about....DD will be home with aunty.

Buzz - I used to cook a deal with my boss. I had to go to New Orleans (To work in Baton rouge) and Houston. I would fly PE to New Orleans and they would rent me a car. I would work in BTR and drive to HOU. The flight was not great. Havind a car in the south for a week instead fo being dropped off at a hotel for the night every night was worth any discomfort.

I have not looked at your link yet, but, I will. I agree that there are so many ways that we are at risk that it is silly. That is part of my point.

I like having the security and air marshalls.

lol, those poor security guys at the airports.

f-mom is the only person ever to ask for a strip search from that cute security guard she saw on the tarmac.

If they just let us all carry our sidearms onboard, there would be no problems at all. Oh, I also hate stinky people on airplanes.

Oh, so do I! There is nowhere to go to get away from the smell. I actually put Vick's Vaporub in my nose when I'm flying. (I had a friend a long time ago that worked in the morgue and that's what they do to block bad smells.) Anyway, it works!

Well for my trouble, United gave me 12,500 bonus miles. I guess they figure my time isn't worth much. I ended up missing a business dinner so I guess they saved me several hundred $'s.

The return trip did go well!

Ok - funny airline story time. :)

Years back when I was living in Dallas my wife and I were in Michigan visiting family. We were on American, and in the OLD terminal at Detroit Metro (Notice a lot of these stories seem to involve Detroit? It really isn't the sh!thole airport it used to be now that all the terminals have been replaced) for our return flight.

The flight was delayed and so after a while we decided to go get a snack. As we were waiting in line at whatever place it was that was near our gate, the announcement came on that the flight was being canceled and we would need to rebook at the ticket counter. Armed with a 30 yard head start, we were the first ones from the flight back to the counter and got 2 tickets on the next non-stop to Dallas. Most of the flight got re-booked having to go through Chicago.

On our return to the gate area they started taking volunteers to be bumped because of overbooking. We ended up on the same connector through Chicago with most of the people from our original flight. We just had $500 worth of vouchers that they didn't. Needless to say, we kept that to ourselves as everyone else was complaining on the flight home. :D
