Anyone ever cater a Spaghetti Dinner?

JoeV

Dough Boy
I have been asked to bake the bread for a spaghetti dinner next Saturday for a men's spiritual renewal weekend at my church. There will be 50 men including team members for dinner. My free-form loaves of Italian yield about 18 slices (plus ends which everyone fights over), and I was thinking 6 loaves would do it (6 loaves x 18 slices = 108 slices = 2 slices per person + a few extra) (about 1.3 oz per slice). There will be salad with the meal as well as meatballs and a dessert of some sort. Do you think that should cover it? We don't have anyone holy enough to multiply the loaves if they come up short, so I want to make sure I make enough at the git-go.:yum: What do you think?

Here's a sliced loaf of rye, which is the same size as my Italian, 1-1/2#. (Knife guru's need not comment on knife. I know it's cheap, but it works for me. I will change when you send me a free, top quality knife.:yum:)

I would suggest you make an extra loaf or two just in case Joe. As for the knife if it works then so what else could you want. Now back to the bread any left overs send them to us. :whistling:

As these are men who are going to be at this retreat, I think that I would rather have extra. Two slices a person may be all anyone eats but it is always better to have more than risk the embarassment of not having enough especially when people tend to eat more home baked bread than any other kind.

I would go along with an extra loaf or two as well. I always believe it is better to overcater than run out.

Have you ever seen folks unaccustomed to fresh home made bread? They often go nuts because it is sooo good! I would make more than two extra loaves, myself.

agreed...better to have toooo much than not enough! Hey, extra can always be added for toast in the morning.

The retreat is for the whole weekend, right?

yup, i agree with the pie lady.

i'm a bread freak, so if there seemed to be enough i'd grab about 4 slices. fresh bread is like good sex. you want it more and more after you realize how good it is compared to boring same ol'.

I agree with Susan and BT - when people taste fresh homemade bread, sometimes they go a little berserk. Four of us ate a whole loaf of Italian bread the other night at dinner....

Thanks for confirming what I already thought. I'll make them 8 loaves for the dinner. Something else is already planned for Sunday breakfast, so I'm off the hook on that one. I also have the church bake sale the same weekend, and I planned on 15 loaves of bread for that event, plus 10 dozen cookies. I've already made Friday a baking day and will not take on any work. I've got to go get 25# of Montana Sapphire just to cover this batch of baking. Then there will be the Easter baking, about 10-12 loaves for that day, plus two batches of Hot Cross Buns. Better just get 50# of flour and be done with it.

:agree:

then you got to take into account the cleaning the plate with a piece of bread factor.. no matter how full you are, you gotta clean the plate with a least one more piece of bread..lol

Ok, OK. I need a couple of you 10 to 12 -loaf advocates at my house on Friday morning at 0600. Bring your mixer and 3/4 sheet pans, ready to start a production line for Italian bread. We'll start the day with Coffee Royals and go downhill from there.:tongue:

Joe, I've been using this site to get my quantities from for my DD's wedding:
Ellen's Kitchen

This is what she suggests for 100:
About 10 pounds, such as:
9 doz. small soft rolls
OR 9-10 garlic bread sliced
OR 18 baguettes
OR 8 variety breads cut in sm. slices (rye, tomato, whole grain etc.)
Plus 4 pounds of butter

You best start Thursday! LOL Now if you would have said Crown Royals, I might've taken you up on it.

We used to do this when I was a kid. We would stop at a bakery on the way home from church on Sunday morning, get a warm loaf of bread and go home. The loaf was totally demolished a short while later. That was 2 adults & 3 kids.

That's the only way to make a Coffee Royal, with Crown Royal. Otherwise it's just coffee and whiskey. You're the only one who remotely volunteered to help, and I think it's just because you want to get loaded on my nickle.

Oh man......You got me!! I will definitely volunteer to help, just give me a call. I'm serious. I don't know what I can do but I'm willing.

Well, Joe, my offer to help is obviously not worth the paper(?) it's written on, but I would enjoy watching and learning...maybe someday? (When the weather warms up a bit, thank you very much).

Thanks Mama. Since my loaves are 1.5#, it looks like 7 loaves would do it. So I guess it will be 8-10 loaves and they should be covered. I've bookmarked the site for future reference.
