in Saṃyutta Nikāya 12.61 we read "Just as a monkey, swinging through a forest wilderness, grabs a branch. Letting go of it; the monkey grabs another branch. Letting go of that branch; it grabs another one. In the same way, what's called 'mind', 'intellect', or 'consciousness' by day and by night arises as one thing and ceases as another." Monkey Mind is described as the inability to "shut down your mind" as you jump from thought to thought. It leads to mental and physical exhaustion. Monkey mind is a condition that many yoga instructors and Buddhist teachers, as well as other oriental practitioners of meditation, recognize as a condition that can be tamed through such activities as meditation, self-awareness and breathing exercises.
