Jim Jones was a charismatic man who set up his own church in America. When questions were asked about Jones' treatment of his congregation, he moved with hundreds of them to a commune in Guyana that he had been building. In 1978, a US Congressman went to Guyana to investigate rumours of kidnap and abuse. He was killed by members of the Jonestown cult, which led Jim Jones to order the mass-suicide of the congregation. Over 900 people were given a fruit drink that had been laced with cyanide.
