The US National Imagery and Mapping Agency and China's National Bureau of Surveying and Mapping were able to operate Global Positioning System satellite equipment on the very top of Mount Everest, thereby determining that the 1954 height was actually about 7 feet too low. The revised official elevation is 29,035 feet.
