Ma Kmitt's Sugar Cookies
My mom cut this recipe out of one of the local newspaper years ago. It was copied onto one of her recipe cards just like this. I am not sure the date or which paper it was from. The card is brown and yellowing with age. It is excellent and makes tons of cookies. When I want to make decorated cut-out cookies, this is the usually the recipe that I use and I have made lots of different sugar cookie recipes.

Ingredients:
1 cup butter or margarine
1-1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 t vanilla
3-1/2 cups flour, sifted
2 t cream of tartar
1 t baking powder
1/2 t salt

Directions:
Beat butter 'til fluffy. Beat in sugar; then beat in eggs, one at a time. Beat in vanilla. Stir together the dry ingredients; beat in. Wrap dough and chill overnight.
Cut off part of dough, leaving rest in refrigerator. Roll out on well-floured pastry cloth or board, to 1/8" thick (or less). Flour dough surface lightly and dip cutters in flour. Cut cookies and place on greased cookie sheets. Sprinke with colored sugar, if desired. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven, just 'til light brown on edges; about 10 minutes. But Watch! Makes lots.
