Stop & Shop Alerts Customers to Voluntary Recall by Northern Star Company

QUINCY, Mass., Feb. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, following a voluntary recall by Northern Star Co. has pulled the following items from sale because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.


The items in Northern Star Co.'s recall all have "use by" dates on their packages of March 29, 2009 to April 3, 2009 and include:

  • Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns 20 oz. bag UPC# 20169-22233
  • Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices 20 oz. bag UPC# 20169-222237
  • Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges 20 oz. bag UPC# 20169-22238
Stop & Shop has not received any reports of illness or injuries associated with the consumption of this product. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause flu-like symptoms: high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Although healthy people rarely contact listeriosis, it can be very serious for those who are pregnant or those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild flu-like illness but infections can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

Customers who have purchased this product should discard any unused portion and bring their purchase receipt to any Stop & Shop for a full refund.
