Grilled Comfort Food - Smoked Northern Beans and Ham Shanks

We recently did pinto beans and ham shanks on the site and my dad has since decided to try another combination and simplify it a bit. Rather than go with uncooked pinto beans that require an overnight soak, he went with precooked Great Northern Beans, and smoked them for about an hour and 20 minutes, threw them into a pot with onion, garlic, ham shanks, and chicken broth. A side of cornbread and you have some incredible comfort food for these frigid temps we're getting...

Here's the write up with pictures of every step, including a few missteps that my dad made along the way. We're not afraid to show when we mess up. We're human.

And here are the pictures:

Looks wonderful, as usual, GF! I'm now inspired to smoke some canned beans myself, for added flavor!

I recently made some Louisiana Red Beans with Rice, and Emeril suggested mashing about half of the bean mixture against the side of the pot, to thicken the mixture. Worked great! The beans were very creamy!
