I saw a recipe that used farro in it, and looked good.

Farro looks to me like large barley.

Andy, you mentioned that someone gave you a bag of it. Have you tried it? How?

Wondering where to look for it in the supermarket, too.

Re: Farro?

Hi Lee,

It does look like large barley and yes someone's did give me some. I cooked it to package directions and just a bit of butter and some salt, nothing fancy.

I found it to be kind of doughy and a bit tough. Possibly I undercooked it. I just so much like quinoa that I never went back to try again.

It is very great nutritionally.

Re: Farro?

I've also heard good things about it but my family's not so into quinoa so I figured why bother, just for me. I guess eventually I'll try it.

I have been making Tabouli with Qunioah and we love it.

I also sub it for rice.

Re: Farro?

Okay, I have been experimenting with farro.

The first bag I found was unlabeled. I followed the directions for cooking, boiled it about 50 minutes, and it was still crunchy and chewy, but tasted good.

Come to find out, it was WHOLE GRAIN farro. The husk is still on.

With further research, I discovered that farro comes in whole grain, semi-pearled, and pearled. Pearling means to remove the husk.

I then found a bag of PEARLED farro (in a gourmet Italian store). I cooked up some of that, and liked that even better. It's more tender, creamier, and is like large barley.

I made cold salads out of the whole grain farro, and added the pearled farro to my turkey meatballs, and into the turkey meatball soup broth.

I far prefer farro to quinoa. Great fiber, excellent substitute for rice and pasta, satisfying and versatile.

I am really liking this wheat grain!

Re: Farro?

I don't really like barley. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to try it someplace before I buy it and then it takes up pantry space.

Re: Farro?

I bet that I had the whole grain. I also bet that I did'nt cook it long enough.

I will revisit it as I am getting more into whole grains.

Thank You Lee

Andy
