FDA warns against eating romaine lettuce due to E. coli multistate outbreak

CDC: No romaine lettuce is safe to eat

The Centers for Disease Control issues stark warning after at least 32 people fall ill in 11 states; Jonathan Hunt reports from Los Angeles.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday said the public should not eat romaine lettuce as a result of a multistate E. coli outbreak.

At least 32 people have gotten sick and at least 13 have been hospitalized as a result of the outbreak that is believed to be connected to romaine lettuce, according to the FDA. So far, 11 states have reported cases from the outbreak, the latest onset of which was on Oct. 31.

"People should not eat romaine lettuce until more is known about the source of the contaminated lettuce and the status of the outbreak," the federal agency said.

The FDA, who is investigating the matter with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and state and local agencies, said they're also working alongside officials in Canada, where people are also being warned to stay away from romaine lettuce.

"A traceback investigation" is underway to find the source of the romaine lettuce consumed by people who became ill," according to the agency, who added that the information they have at this point is too limited to make a targeted recall.

"At this stage in the investigation, the most efficient way to ensure that contaminated romaine is off the market would be for industry to voluntarily withdraw product from the market, and to withhold distribution of romaine until public health authorities can ensure the outbreak is over and/or until FDA can identify a specific source of contamination," the FDA said.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I read that the outbreak was contained and they figured out the place in CA it had come from. I'm still a little leary of romaine but ... FDA says it's A-OK.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Never explain yourself. Your friends don't need it and your enemies won't believe it anyway.
