Desktop pc motherboard fried itself a few days ago....

The tech told my other half that it's better to just buy a new system.

Anybody care to confirm/refute that tech's statement? I always thought the new MB's only cost about $200, plus installation. A new system, entry-level, is probably going to run us $500 or so. I'd rather save money if it's possible.

Depending on what you are looking for, motherboards can cost way less than that.

http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=20&name=Motherboards

The questions are:

How old is the motherboard?
Are you reasonably sure the CPU is OK?
Are you reasonably sure the RAM is OK?
Is everything new enough that it can install on one of the newer motherboards?

If the machine is 4 years old or better the tech is probably giving good advice.

Is the data backed up?

Answers:

1) Same age as the computer, which we bought used, HDD wiped.
2) Not sure.
3) Not sure. She didn't take the tower in, just described the problem to the tech.
4) Probably not, running Win XP for the O/S.

I'm beginning to believe the tech. And yes, the data is backed up.

Alan,

If there is no data that you need on the PC, a.nd if cash is an object, you might do well to look in Craigslist. Replacing a motherboatd is a crapshoot. If you are pretty sure tjar rhe power supply and hard drive are good, you can get a CPU, motherboard. and RAM all put together if you want to go that way.

Not sure of.your budget but lets start here:
$300 complete system, I like this set up. Offer $250

This one is ok and will get you back and running. $200
http://tulsa.craigslist.org/sys/2904439360.html

I personally own an older model of this one and even though it is emachines I like it. Emachines/gateway not like Acer as the ad says. $239

Its a start Allen. If you need any help let me know. If you don't find anything in the next little bit or if finances are tight let me know. I will see if I can find something cheap here. I will be in OK in about a month. :)

I agree with the others, and your tech.
IF you could still buy the exact mother board you would have the best chance of everything working together okay. Otherwise you could have driver issues, the memory might not work, the processor might also have to be upgraded, it can get downright fugly.

Tiger Direct http://www.tigerdirect.com/ and Woot http://www.woot.com/ will both have some good buys on computers, some are refurbished. I'm running a refurbished laptop now that I bought from tiger direct two years ago and all is going great with it.

Laptops cost as low as about $300.

Rather than to go through that bother, and unless I can get a friend to repair it, he'll probably suggest getting a new one.

Well, we ended up taking it in to the shop we bought it from. It was, in fact, the power supply. $98 later, we're back up and running with the desktop. I have my laptop back, and PeppA is thinking about getting ANOTHER pc for her, and let the kids have the current desktop.
