This is another recipe from LuckyTrim's collection, and while on the subject of "Pennsylvania chilis", I thought of PanchoHombre.

I love the sound of this one, too! :WitchBrewsSmiley:

PHILLY CHILI

4 cups onions, chopped
1/3 cup jalapeno peppers, sliced
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
2 tbl dark brown sugar
2 lbs ground beef
1 tbl unsweetened cocoa
3 tbl olive oil
1 tbl black pepper
1 28oz can stewed tomatoes
3 tbl "Louisiana" hot sauce
1 6oz can tomato paste
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese*
1 15oz can chili beans
2 tbl jack Daniels whiskey
1 14.5oz can chicken broth
4oz philadelphia cream cheese
3 tbl chili powder
1 16oz bag tortilla chips*

in a 10" skillet, brown the meat, drain and place in a 6-quart pot.

Heat oil in the skillet and saute half the onion and all of the pepper till soft. Add to the pot.

With the pot over medium heat, add tomatoes, paste, beans and broth, chili powder peppers, sugar, cocoa, black pepper and hot sauce. Bring to the boil and cook 15 minutes.

Add cream cheese and whiskey and stir until the cheese is completely incorporated.

Reduce heat and simmer on low heat for two hours, stirring every 15 minutes.

Garnish with the other half of chopped onions and shredded cheese. Serve with tortilla chips.

Yes, I like the idea of those ingredients in the chili, too, Pancho.

I'd probably have to dial back the 1/3 cup of jalapenos and 3 T. Louisiana hot sauce, though.

I just like a SENSE of heat in chili.

I made chili with cocoa powder once. It was one of those kits from Cracker Barrel with lots of different dry beans in it. And it said to add cocoa powder. The recipe stated to make the day before eating. But of course we didn't wait. I also used the pressure cooker to make the beans.

WARNING!! It tastes better the second day. The first day it tastes strange. After sitting overnight it is OUT OF THIS WORLD good! Even DD that HATES chili loved it the second day AND even had a chili dog or 2!! SHE HATES hot dogs MORE than chili. LOL :yum:

It was called Route 66 chili and it was a kit from Cracker Barrel. It had mixed dry beans and a packet of spices. The recipe called for unsweetened cocoa powder but it didn’t kill the heat. I didn't soak the beans, just stuck them in the pressure cooker and 15 minutes later they were beans!! LOL It called for ground chicken but I used ground beef. I haven't seen those kits since.

Heres a picture:

Chili & rice topped with sour cream, shredded cheddar & green onions.

WOW! I'd omit that sour cream and add red onion instead. Looks fantastic, though.

I think I'll do chili over Fritos tonight with a guacamole salad.

Thanks, LT. I edited the recipe in the original post above as well.

I'm making this tonight, and will post photos when I serve it tomorrow.

Okay, here's the Philly Chili in a taco salad - before and after garnishes.

I only changed a couple of things, since I used what I had: some homegrown Wrinkled Old Man peppers, a block of unsweetened chocolate (finely chopped), and a nip of Jim Beam.

Otherwise, I made the recipe as written.

Very good!

Thanks, LuckyTrim!

That looks great! I used some of my leftover chili for a taco salad too. I also froze some chili in small portions, just the right size for taco/chili salads later.
