We were running low on dessert goodies, so I decided to make a batch of my mother's great Peanut Butter Cookies (recipe attached -- as an experiment, I added about ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract to this batch).
Anyway, we have a built in GE unit with both an upper and a lower oven. The upper unit has digital controls, but for some reason the lower one has a dial, and it's always 50 degrees too hot. I wasn't think and screwed up, however, and had it in my head that it was always 50 degrees to low. The recipe calls for baking the cookies for 8 to 12 minutes at 375, so I should have set the lower oven to 325, but instead I set it to 425. That made a bit of a difference. When the timer went off, I went into the kitchen to find smoke pouring out of the lower over, and I quickly tossed the batch, parchment paper and all, into the sink.
Here's the results:
The Good Cookies from the Upper Oven @ 375 Degrees for 10 Minutes:
The Slightly Overdone Cookies from the Lower Oven @ 475 Degrees for 8 Minutes:
