Be sure and try the sawmill gravy. Made from the real-deal gen-you-wine sawdust from the mill floor! :yum:

We have no idea where we're going. A friend called last night and said "let's go out for dinner tomorrow," so we're going to their house for cocktails and learn where we're going.

I just got back from the store and found that Fish and Chips batter QSis recommended, so tonight will be my Friday night fish fry with those tilapia fillets. And a while ago on a cooking show I saw some guys that owned a dinor say they soak the fries in vinegar and water before frying, so I'm going to see what that does.

Sattie, I have a friend who does a lot of sght-seeing driving around the country. He plans his routes in order to hit Cracker Barrels whenever possible. LOL!

I'm having steamed hot pastrami (the store-bought, fatty, sliced-thin stuff - none of that lean, NY style garbage) on bulkie rolls, with half-sour pickles.

Having a Greek salad for lunch today, in order to get some veggies in.

The only time I've been in Cracker Barrel is to buy my sis & bil gift certificates. They love that place.

Chowhound, I cut my fish filets into smaller pieces. No real reason, I just like having lumps of fried fish on my plate. Totally not necessary.

Make sure you thoroughly dry your potatoes before putting them in the oil, or it will spit like crazy. But I'm sure you knew that.

Yea, I don't think Cracker Barrel is all that bad, but with all the places to pick from around here, that would be one of my lesser choices. OH WELL... gonna make the best of it, maybe I will get the blueberry pancakes!!!

Qsis... your dinner and lunch sound great right now... I need some food!!!!

Fred, let me know how the fries turnout, that sounds really interesting and zesty!

Our kids say Cracker Barrel is for the "Blue Hairs." LMOA

Me & the Mrs don't want to be accused of being old, so we go to Bob Evans instead.

I wanted to test the system here, so I highjacked someone else's intro and slid in the back door. Nobody chased me away soI thought I'd stick around until I get banned for saying something like "Food Porn." Oh, crap, now I went and did it....

Does Jagermeister, Corona and Xanax count as dinner....or are those just appetizers?:yum:

DISCLAIMER-This response, of course, is tongue-in-cheek, and I in no way condone the misuse of pharmaceuticals. Remember....Just say maybe....errrr I mean NO!!!

I'll let ya know on the fries. The only thing I didn't catch on the show was how long to soak em for.... And I .... err..... probably should have started them soaking before Mr Couch called my name  I'll just go heavier on the vinegar.
And thanks for the safety tip, Lee!

Ooh, Xanax...... we got ourselves one o them goormay cooks here

Hey Smoke King. I think we'll get along. :D Jagermeister is a staple on our houseboat. Love it. We even carry a couple of the miniature bottles for emergencies when we run out unexpectedly. We get it cold and drink it straight and chase it with beer. :thumb: :D

Went to Red Lobster tonight. Had Pineapple glazed tilapia. Excellent. :thumb: :D

I like cracker barrel. I always get breakfast though. Their hash browns are to die for. But it's normally kinda expensive cause my wife always finds a tidbit or two in the store. :pat:

Took a little break.. but I'm back! Brought some buddies with me too!

Ok, I had breakfast at CB.... (DH was ). Two hard fried eggs, grit, with that saw dust gravy, turkey sausage and biscuits. Pretty darn good. DH had the catfish.

Here is the funny thing that happened, as we walked in, I noticed over in the candy section that the have Mallow Cups.... LOVE these things from my child hood and figured after dinner, I would pick me up a couple. Soooo after dinner, I go browsing around in the general store and I go looking for the Mallow cups. There not there!!!! Ok, so now I'm thinking I must of imagined it or had too many glasses of water or something. So I look around and around knowing that I saw the darn things! I finally asked the cashier about them and she said a guy came in 10 minutes ago and bought the whole friggin box!!!!! WTH! What are the odds of that!

OK. That was good. Two thumbs up on the batter QSis suggested. That was just what I was looking for. I just need to work on my frying technique because the fillets never released from my SS saute pan. Probably should have used CI.

On to the fries.... they were fantastic! Even soaking them just a few hours they picked up just a hint of added flavor, but I couldn't believe how crispy they were. Anyone who makes homemade fries knows they can be a little on the moist side, even when turning brown in the oil, but these were very.... "light" (?) and crispy tasting. They had a real nice crunch to them even though they were barely brown by the time they were done. I'm doing them this way all the time. And I don't make thin cut fries, these were averaging 3/8 - 1/2" thick.

Maybe more oil, chow. I eyeball it, and I am spacially-challenged, so perhaps I use more like an inch and a half.

Kind of like the distance between the tip of your thumb and the first knuckle. How many inches is that?

Sounds like your fish and chips were great, though! Man, I love that meal!

Well, we managed to talk the other couple into trying our new favorite restaurant. They loved it! I had the Country Fried Steak with smashed taters and white gravy with some chicken dumpling soup all for $7. My friend had the chicken livers dinner with a couple of sides, also for $7. This place has 7 meals every week for $7, and if you don't get in there early, you'll end up waiting 45-60 minutes for a table.

Went back to their house and had pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee. Very nice evening, and a durn sight better than Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans.

Hey thanks. Since you're here, I don't need to hunt down the other thread.
They were awesome! Crispy, just the right amount of breading/batter thickness, just what I was looking for.

I went light on the oil compared to that. About 1/2", which came up over half of the fillet's thickness. I just expected them to release and at five minutes plus, they were getting pryed up and flipped. They still came out great. Didn't you say you cut yours into bite sized pieces anyway? I just broke mine into bite sized pieces while they were cooking (lol).
I've only used CI before to fry fish. I'll probably go back to it next time.
