Two companies issued beef recalls late Friday.

Holten Meat Inc., based in Sauget, Ill., announced it is recalling about 241,000 pounds of ground beef product that may contain foreign materials, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

The products subject to recall are 20-pound cases of "100% PURE GROUND BEEF BULK." Each case contains four 5-pound Keeper Casing Chubs per box, which can be identified by the package code "12000" and the label code "1007982112000."

Each product is also labeled "PACKED FOR INSTITUTIONAL USE ONLY" — "NOT FOR RESALE."

Each label bears the establishment number "EST-02591" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The product was produced on various dates from January 2009 through May 2009 and was distributed to institutions in Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The problem was discovered after the company received complaints from institutional customers about finding metal clips, which were used to seal the casing chubs, in the product. Neither FSIS nor Holten has received reports of injury at this time.

Idaho recall

Meanwhile, XL Four Star Beef Inc. in Nampa, Idaho, is recalling about 14,560 pounds of beef primal and subprimal products that were imported from Canada and not presented for re-inspection upon entry into the United States.

The beef products were produced on May 22, 2009, and were distributed to various wholesalers in Arizona, California, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York and Oregon. The beef products were distributed only at the wholesale level before the recall; so, none of the beef products would have reached consumers.

The problem was discovered by FSIS.

Both recalls are considered Class III recalls, in which the risk to health is low.
