October 15, 2008 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Kroger-brand semi-sweet chocolate chips because of a labeling error.
The FDA said the manufacturer, Barry Callebaut USA LLC, initiated the voluntary recall because the product might contain undeclared milk protein, thereby posing a health risk for people allergic to dairy products.
The recalled "Kroger Value Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips," are sold in 12-ounce packages bearing UPC 11110-86603 and a "sell by" date of May 30, 2010.
The chocolate chips were sold at Kroger Co. stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
Consumers who purchased the recalled product can return it for a refund or contact the manufacturer at 866-678-5221 for further information.
