Yardsaling is almost here, and I'm going to to a few fleee markets to look for a dutch oven.

Here's my question, If I buy a d.o from either a yard sale, flee market, Can I steralize it and season it?

Can I also do this with knifes I want as well, Like a fillet knife, scaling knife?

Thanks for the answers gang.

Sure you can, I gotten a couple of fry pans over the years in similar place. Most of what I've gotten the last few years, I get from the Auctions we hold monthly and buy from the vendors that win. The self storage business we auction on average a unit or two a month which is strictly bid on a space and cash sale. Many times it is junk but on occasion the people that come will offer us something from the sale that they know I might like and usually pretty cheap. We see a lot of kitchen gear, exercise equipment (a full bow flex at the last auction), furniture, DVDs, electronics and tools. These are usually held year around in most areas and the vendors actually make a living buying and selling this stuff.

If it is stainless steel, Enameled cast iron you won't need to worry about seasoning at all. Your mother is correct too as that is how I clean them also even when new. Now if it is cast iron then after doing it then you will need to season it. I use lard for seasoning all of my cast iron though I've not needed to do it on my older pans for years but when I get a new one I do also even if they are already seasoned.

My entire kitchen is second-hand, and it all works great. Cast iron will be sterilized when you season it at 350-400 degrees. In fact, I scored a brand new in the original box with tags and stickers, never even used, Masahiro 180mm gyuto in a thrift shop this afternoon...$8.

Take away my Dutch Ovens (two sizes) and I'd be like a man without................ I dunno--- but it wouldn't be a happy kitchen any more .........

Yard saling is a sport in our house and our vehicles almost automatically turn at the sight of a "Yard Sale" sign. We've gotten many great bargains over the years. Time to pack our tote bag with assorted batteries and extension cords. You never know when all an electronic needs is a new battery. Picked up a great little stereo system for $2 a couple of years ago because of that.

99% of what I have in my kitchen is 2nd hand! I would not have it any other way.

Why spend store prices when I get great stuff used. Check out my albums for good examples of what I buy from yard sales, thrift shops, Ebay, Craigslist, etc.
