Anyone make pickels the crock way?

Have an old good 8 gallon crock and have a large garden (pickling cucumbers already planted) and we decided to make dill pickles this year!

Tips/hints/advice/ APPRECIATED!

I can remember my grandmother making pickles but I was too little to remember exactly how it was done.

You might pick up some ideas by looking at Japanese pickle recipes. I use a small crock and a stone for a lid/weight when I make pickles--but they are quick pickles.
