Time travel could be a reality within just three months, Russian mathematicians have claimed.

They believe an experiment nuclear scientists plan to carry out in underground tunnels in Geneva in May could create a rift in the fabric of the universe. Scroll down for more...

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) hopes its "atom-smashing" tests - which aim to recreate the conditions in the first billionth of a second after the "Big Bang'" created everything - will shed invaluable light on the origins of the universe.

But Irina Aref'eva and Igor Volovich, of Moscow's Steklov Mathematical Institute, say the energy produced by forcing tiny particles to collide at close to the speed of light could open the door to visitors from the future.
According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, any large amounts of matter or energy will distort the space and time that surrounds it.
If the energy or mass is large enough, it is claimed that time can be distorted so much that it folds back on itself - creating a wormhole, or time tunnel, between the present and the future.
But Dr Brian Cox, a member of CERN and one of Britain's leading experts in particle physics, is highly sceptical about the Russian claims, calling them "nothing more than a good science fiction story".

He said: "Cosmic ray collisions in the upper atmosphere are far more energetic than anything we can produce.
"They have been occurring for five billion years, and no time travellers have appeared.
"Stephen Hawking has suggested that any future theory of quantum gravity will probably close this possibility off, not least because the universe usually proceeds in a sane way, and time travel into the past isn't sane."
Cynics often point out that if time travel was really possible, we would have been visited by people from the future. However, Einstein's laws of physics suggest that time travel is only possible into the past as far as the point when the first time machine was invented.

WOW. I'll believe it when I see it, but WOW. Mind boggling. It scares me that we (the human race) will be sure to screw things up. Maybe that is what happens in 2012 and why life as we see it ceases to exit. Sure hope not but you got me rambling. :D

There is an internet time machine (http://www.archive.org/index.php).

If it would work...COOOL! But... I'll wait to believe it!! :)

I usually go with what Steven Hawkins says... and if he says aint happening dude... then it aint happening.
Besides, you don't have to have his mind for this stuff to figure it out, just run the numbers. They won't create enough energy to do anything, they are talking a minuscule amount of energy that they will need special highly sensitive equipment to monitor and detect.

Yeah..but if it could work... WHERE would you go? Or should I say...when would you go?

About 31 years back....

31... so when you were about 5?

I was going to say into the future, but at the rate we're going, that might be a big mistake.

And now "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!" is stuck in my head!!! Thanks Buzz!!!:yum:

Yes Calico, I would be about 5 at the time... hey if given the chance to go back in time, why not chance a few things around LOL.

If I was going to change things... I don't think I have to start changing them until I was at least 13 lol... I was a perfect five year old...

But... If I was going to go back I'd like to go way back.... like to the cowboy and Indian days or the old south. *just for a week or two*

I'm not so much on time travel but if the Geneva science crew create even a small black hole it could eat the earth. The event horizon on these things is forever guys and dangerous to play with in my opinion. That is my main fear of trying to prove the big bang theory with actual experiments.

They won't be creating enough energy to make even a minute one. Although that is an oxy moron anyone. Like Uranium or Plutonium etc there is a critical mass that has to be reached to achieve the release of energy needed to create a nuclear explosion or black hole or worm hole, etc.
That critical mass is measured in pounds and ounces, what they are using is measured in individual particles.

If they do create even a small one for just a few seconds it could be a major problem. Now this is just a guess based on my limited knowledge of the subject but it can be a seriously scary situation if it happens.

Sounds like it belongs on a cooking forum. How does earth taste? Is this dirty?

Ingredients:
1 particle collider/accelerator (can use the Swiss kind if necessary)
1 type A particle
1 type B particle
Note: You will need more energy to make this thing work than it will create, so invest in your local electrical company first.

Directions:
Accelerate particle A in a clockwise direction until near the speed of light. Accelerate particle B in a counter-clockwise direction until near the speed of light. Now, gently bump the two particles so they start passing closer and closer to each other.
At this point, when you know you are a few 'revolutions' from them colliding, you will want to put on your running shoes and start running like mad.
The machine will do the rest. The particles will collide, the black hole will form, and the earth will be eaten.
Top with cheese and enjoy the ride!

So just how close are those particles getting to one another? Maybe I only have to buy a half pint instead of the fifth.

I think right now they are just sitting in the same room hanging out waiting to be put in motion... LOL!
They are having cooling issues and such, haven't even gotten to a test stage yet.

Hmm. I went back to the 50's this past weekend. A freind's acquantance was playing at the Blue Chip Casino on Saturday in Michigan City, IN. The Neverly Brothers. These guys bring back the essence of 50's music. Not the usual blaring crap with most tribute bands. These guys only play to small audiences. HIGHLY RECOMENDED. I honestly felt I went back to my youth for a while.

Oh, yeah, Russians also have invented first airplane, build first train engine and VCR, also they claim the XR machine invantion and few other things I can't remember right now. I wouldn't worry too much.

as a proponent of the Everet-Wheeler "many-worlds" model, Time travel should indeed be possible without violating laws of causality.
as for Hawking, lets just say I don`t hold him in too high a regard.
